My Favorite Books On Creativity:
1. The War of Art by Steven Pressfield
This book is amazing. Every time I read it, I get back to work. Short, sharp chapters outline what stops us from working (Resistance) and what helps defeat Resistance (turning pro). Pressfield knows what he’s talking about – he struggled with Resistance for decades, and didn’t start enjoying professional success as a writer for years after turning pro.
He also wrote some follow-ups:
Turning Pro: Tap Your Inner Power and Create Your Life’s WorkÂ
2. The Creativity Habit: Learn It and Use It For Life by Twyla TharpÂ
Tharp has distilled a lifetime of creative achievement into an approachable and fun guide. Honestly, I don’t know much about dance and I’ve always been intimidated by ballet, but this is one of the most enjoyable books I’ve ever read on creativity and life. Tharp shares her organizing strategies for large projects (lots of boxes!), the activities she uses to jolt her mind when she’s stuck, and her daily practices. Very worthwhile.
She also wrote a follow-up, The Collaborative Habit: Life Lessons for Working TogetherÂ
